We catch up with Group CEO of Wendy Wu Tours, Joe Karbo, to hear what he values in the travel business
Expect the unexpected
I always hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Our industry is a resilient one, we’ve bounced back many times through challenging periods because travel is ingrained in most of our lives as a necessity, not a luxury, and the need to escape from our busy lives will never change.
It’s all about the people and the company
Being surrounded with dedicated people all striving for the same goals is enough to make me feel energised getting up each day.
Mentors make a difference
They’re usually brutally honest with their assessments, which is important as we can all sometimes live in our personal bubbles. I found the process of writing things down and reviewing one’s progress to be effective. It also helps to be honest in your responses, take criticism when it’s delivered, be aware and move on.
Key business drivers
Excellent communication, sharing knowledge, passionate staff, and influential leaders. Building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders is a must.
How to stand out from the crowd
Work hard — go the extra mile, always be positive, have inner strength, care about your team members, be creative and analytical, believe in your abilities and think big.
